Elementary Band

Band meets Tuesday and Wednesday from 12:30-1:00 and does not take away from class instruction time. Both rehearsals include all band students in 5th-6th grades. Within the first year students will be able to play and understand rhythm, melody and harmony, know how to care for their instrument, and perform for others.

We use Essential Elements 2000 for our Elementary Band. Book 1 includes a CD and DVD that feature play-along tracks with a professional player for every instrument as well as SmartMusic® Software (practice, record, and e-mail a performance, plus on-screen assessment).

We also use the Simple Rhythmatician. With this book we apply rhythm theory through performance, reinforce and assess progress with rhythm worksheets, and have fun composing original rhythms and tunes!

As far as where to get an instrument, I highly recommend Taylor Music. They are a mail-order company, but the quality, prices and customer service exceed anything found locally. Their phone number is 1-800-USA-BAND. They also include free accessories and the Essential Elements 2000 book that you need.

If you decide to go elsewhere, please make sure that you are getting a quality instrument. Some name brands to look for are Yamaha, Selmer, LeBlanc, Buffet, Armstrong, Yanagisawa, King, & Conn. There are a few others, but please ask if you are unsure.
